Airport Mania is a time management game with a difference: instead of organising people in a boutique or cafe, you are coordinating an airport and making sure that the planes land safely. The planes have facial expressions and make noises to indicate whether they are happy or getting impatient, and the graphics are in a cute, fresh, cartoony style. As the air traffic controller, unexpected elements, from fog to the president's plane needing to land, keep you on your toes.

The basic gameplay involves landing each plane, taking it to a gate where it can unload cargo or passengers and board a new lot, then directing it back to a runway where it can take off again. The planes are happy if this all happens quickly, and this is how you earn high scores. The challenge begins, however, as more planes arrive and you have to juggle their needs. Sometimes there are more planes than gates and one or two have to wait in a parking space until a gate comes free. Some planes needs repairs or refuelling, and later you can upgrade the facilities at your airport.

It is satisfying to plan in advance and line up landing combos that earn you a bonus. You also have to try to match the colours of plane to the correct coloured gate. It is tricky to keep track of which planes have been waiting longest and not forget what you are supposed to be doing but icons that indicate each plane's present requirements give your memory a helping hand. This game is fun and gives a pleasing sense of competence as you watch your busy airport running smoothly, with happy little coloured planes buzzing in and out. |
