Cradle of Rome builds on the traditional match-three-in-a-row genre with an incentive based storyline to keep you motivated as you play. You are trying to construct the famous city, stage by stage, starting with mills and quarries and progressing to grand landmarks like the Coliseum and the Forum. This story also sees you progress through the ranks, from a lowly peasant to the Emperor.

As well as matching coins to earn the money needed to construct the city, you are also matching the actual materials and tools you need, so this introduces a strategic element to the gameplay as you may be short of a particular resource and need to direct your play towards attaining it. Between levels you see the city and have the chance to add to it if you have played well enough.

The gameplay is not startlingly original, but it is a well designed and satisfying example of this type of game. It's very moreish getting great combos and seeing your city grow. Watch out, though, because you have to complete each level and get all the supplies you need before the blue water runs out of the jug! |
